Abstract

Childhood is a fundamental stage to an optimal person’s physical, social, psychological and biological development. Individual, familiar, cultural, social and historical aspects have an impact on a person’s growth. This article shows the influence of different contexts over mental health problems appearance in children and adolescents. Moreover, social determinants of health and their relationship with several mental alterations in this population are examined. Family is emphasized for being a significant primary network to build prosocial behavior and emotional self-regulation, as well as for its importance to prevent mental health problems. In like manner, children’s resilience and self-esteem are posed as protective factors against mental health problems.
